BENEVOLENCE AS AN AREA OF MINISTRY IN 2010

     SHEPHERD: Kenny Henderson

     DEACON:  Patrick Fay

CONTACT FORM (To be completed if you have questions or want to volunteer)

The Vilonia church takes seriously the charge given to Christians in Matthew 25:34-36.  It is our belief that compassion is one of the attributes that a child of God must possess and practice in order to pleasing to our God.  The greatest example  we have of compassion and love toward those in need was demonstrated by our Lord.  The formal programs described below have been established to help the church focus on this activity.

If you can help with any of the programs listed below, please contact the shepherd or deacon responsible for the work (above).  Listed below are a number of ways in which you can help.  These lists are not all-inclusive, but merely suggestions to help as you consider being involved in this work.  If your talents, gifts and abilities prepare you to be involved in Benevolence, we encourage you to do so.

COMMUNITY PANTRY

This program traces it roots to our very beginning as a church plant.  In January 2008 we began offering a free meal to the community on the third Sunday of each month.  Over time we came to realize that there were many in our community who needed more than a meal.  Given the challenging economic times there are many families who need help with meals each day.  In April 2008 we began offering care packages that include a number of food staples to anyone who requests assistance.

Since April 2008 we have provided assistance to over 160 different families in our community and the surrounding area.

     HOW CAN YOU HELP?

  • By providing food and supplies to be distributed

  • Volunteers are needed to staff the pantry on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month between the hours of 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

  • By helping to organize the food and supplies ahead of time

DISASTER READINESS

Whether it is an individual family who experiences a fire or flood in their home or a community-wide event such as a tornado, the Vilonia church wants to be ready to provide assistance whenever it is needed.  This is a new program for 2010 that needs vision and organization.

     HOW CAN YOU HELP?

  • By providing leadership, organization, and strategic vision to the program

  • Help in any way needed whenever an event occurs

ILLNESS AND BEREAVEMENT PREPAREDNESS

This is another area that is being formalized in 2010.  The goal of this ministry is to provide assistance to individuals and/or families who suffer illness and loss.  Activities could range from simply providing a meal to being there for those who have suffered a traumatic event such as the loss of a loved one.

     HOW CAN YOU HELP?

  • Provide meals or food

  • By being the hands, feet and eyes for someone who needs transportation - running errands, doctor's visit, etc. - or other assistance

  • By listening, relating, and sharing your experiences in similar difficult situations

  • Sitting up with the sick or providing child-care for those who may need it

  • Visiting the hospital, nursing home, or the home of a shut-in
